UK and France-Led Virtual Summit on Strait of Hormuz Begins; President Lee Attends and Delivers Remarks

President Lee Expected to Address Energy Supply Chain Issues and More

An international summit aimed at ensuring the free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, led by the United Kingdom and France, began on the evening of April 17 in Paris, France.

On April 17, the Office of the President announced through a press release that the international videoconference on the Strait of Hormuz had commenced at approximately 9:12 p.m. Korea Standard Time. President Lee Jaemyung attended the "Strait of Hormuz Freedom of Navigation Initiative" videoconference, which was held with the participation of representatives from more than 40 countries.


President Lee plans to deliver messages to the leaders of various countries regarding the necessity of international solidarity for the free passage through the Strait of Hormuz. While the meeting was held virtually, the heads of state from the European G7 nations participated in person. The United States, Israel, and Iran, all parties directly involved in the ongoing conflict, did not attend.


International organizations, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), also participated in the meeting. Previously, the UK Prime Minister's Office stated that world leaders were convening to establish an international mission for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
