Transforming Into a Stay-Based Event With Gourmet Food, Experiences, and Nighttime Programs

The Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival, the representative spring festival of Yeongyang-gun in North Gyeongsang Province, is aiming to evolve this year from merely a "festival to eat at" into a "gourmet festival to stay for." According to Yeongyang-gun, the 21st Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival will be held from May 7 to May 10, spanning four days at the Yeongyang Culture Center and throughout the downtown area.

The Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival is a signature regional event that attracts over 50,000 visitors every year. Highlighting the unique aroma and taste of wild vegetables, it has brought tourists from across the country as Yeongyang’s iconic spring event. This year's festival, themed "A Gourmet Spring Feast Served by Nature," is characterized by its transformation into a content-oriented festival that combines gourmet food, hands-on experiences, and storytelling, moving beyond a simple consumption-based event.

In particular, Yeongyang-gun has focused on expanding the festival beyond just buying and selling specialty products to an immersive experience that engages all five senses through cooking, tasting, and interactive activities. The plan is to elevate the festival’s quality by turning the region’s representative wild vegetables from mere "products" into "experiences."

Yeongyang is a pristine area made up mostly of mountains, where wild vegetables such as Aralia elata shoots (dureup), Ligularia fischeri (gomchwi), and Cirsium setidens (eosuri) grow naturally around Mount Ilwol. These wild vegetables have long been recognized for their deep aroma and excellent texture. This year’s festival is expected to connect the competitiveness of these natural local resources to gourmet content, serving as a stage to highlight Yeongyang’s unique brand value.

The layout of the festival venues has also been redesigned more strategically. By organically linking the market stalls, traditional market, special stage, and gourmet spaces, the event flow has been designed so that visitors can naturally move between various programs. By strengthening the theme of "walking, tasting, and enjoying," the entire festival area has been unified into a single experiential space.

Additionally, the range of nighttime performances and emotional programs will be expanded, creating a festival environment that continues seamlessly from day into night. This demonstrates a strong commitment to increasing visitor stays and transforming the festival from a simple one-time event into a stay-based tourism festival that encourages accommodations, spending, and revitalization of the local economy.

This aligns with the recent trend of regional festivals evolving from mere seasonal events into platforms that drive the local economy. Should the Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival successfully integrate local specialty products, traditional markets, and cultural programs into a stay-based tourism model, it is expected to have a significant positive impact on local businesses and the resident population.

An official from Yeongyang-gun commented, "This year’s festival has been prepared to bring together nature, gourmet food, and hands-on experiences," adding, "We hope many visitors will fully enjoy the atmosphere of spring in Yeongyang."

The key question is whether the Yeongyang Wild Vegetable Festival can move beyond its familiar role as a "spring specialty product sales event" and weave together the region's nature, cuisine, neighborhoods, and nighttime scenery into a unified content experience. Ultimately, the festival's competitiveness will depend on how convincingly it showcases Yeongyang’s value as a city worth staying in, beyond simply the taste of wild vegetables.
