Yeongyang, A Day Connecting Differences

Yeongyang County once again affirmed the value of inclusion within the local community by organizing a space for harmony where people with and without disabilities could come together. On April 17, Yeongyang County announced that it held the 46th Yeongyang County Disability Day celebration at the Yeongyang County Community Center, hosted by the Yeongyang Branch of the Gyeongbuk Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled.

This event was organized to improve social awareness of people with disabilities, enhance their rights and interests, and further spread a culture of inclusion throughout the local community. The event was meaningful in that Disability Day was expanded beyond a simple commemorative occasion, becoming a venue to explore the direction of a community that respects diversity.

On the day of the event, more than 600 participants-including local people with disabilities and their families, volunteers, members of disability organizations, and representatives from related institutions-gathered to fill the venue. Before the official ceremony, the Yeongyang Branch of the Gyeongbuk Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled heightened the atmosphere with a celebratory performance featuring a Nanta show, line dance, and Taekwondo dance.

During the commemorative ceremony, 19 individuals-including both those who contributed to the advancement of welfare for people with disabilities and volunteers who have dedicated themselves to supporting them-were presented with awards. This was a moment to honor those who have quietly practiced solidarity and care in the field, while also reflecting on the meaning of welfare built through community collaboration.

A representative from Yeongyang County stated, "Disability Day is a meaningful occasion for our society to respect diversity and move toward becoming a community where everyone lives together," adding, "We will continue to expand policies and programs that support the independence of people with disabilities and improve their quality of life."

This event served to break down the barriers of prejudice surrounding disability and demonstrated how a community of coexistence and consideration can be realized within the region. More than 600 people who filled the Yeongyang County Community Center that day symbolized the community’s determination to move toward an inclusive society, showing that welfare is not just about support but is a social promise to live together.
