The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the General Committee for the Establishment of the 12th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand (Chairman: Jang Gilsoo) announced that the third national policy debate will be held on April 22 at 10 a.m. at the 2nd floor of the KOBACO Hall, Korea Broadcasting Center in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.
At the policy debate, Professor Heo Jin, Chair of the Demand Planning Subcommittee of the 12th Basic Electricity Plan Establishment Committee and professor at Ewha Womans University’s Department of Climate and Energy System Engineering, will deliver a comprehensive presentation on demand projections, followed by a panel discussion with experts.
An official from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment explained, "The Demand Subcommittee under the General Committee for the Establishment of the 12th Basic Electricity Plan has derived a provisional outlook for power demand through nine discussions with relevant experts over the past four months. This public debate has been arranged to enhance transparency in the planning process and to reflect the voices of the public, in line with the principle of creating an open electricity plan together with the people."
The power demand outlook predicts the amount of electricity South Korea will use over the next 15 years, and serves as the most fundamental data for establishing energy policy. Based on the projected demand, the required generation facility capacity and the scale of the transmission network connecting them are determined.
In particular, due to structural changes in power demand such as the recent expansion of AI data centers, the establishment of semiconductor clusters, and the promotion of electrification, the importance of sophisticated demand forecasting has become more critical than ever.
The debate will be broadcast live online in addition to in-person attendance. Previously, the Ministry held the first and second policy debates on December 30, 2025, on "Desirable Energy Mix," and on January 7, 2026, on "Harmonious Use of Renewable Energy and Nuclear Power," respectively.
