Incheon City will allocate 12 billion won to conduct year-round cleanup activities in response to the marine waste problem.
The city announced on the 17th that, due to the continued inflow of inland waste through the Han River estuary and the effects of tides and currents causing ongoing marine debris, it will aim to collect 5,600 tons of marine waste this year through its cleanup project.
The city plans to invest 7.85 billion won in projects to collect and process marine and coastal waste flowing in from areas such as the upper reaches of the Han River. In addition, 590 million won will be allocated to the vulnerable coastal waste response project, which manages waterfront areas by deploying collection personnel in tourist-concentrated areas at all times, and 2.2 billion won will be spent on cleaning up abandoned marine waste around major ports and harbors.
Furthermore, the city will support the operation of waste collection transport vessels in island areas (1.08 billion won) and the purchase of collected waste (200 million won). A total of 60 million won will also be invested in prevention and awareness improvement activities aimed at reducing the generation of marine waste, based on citizen participation.
Incheon has a high demand for marine waste management due to its extensive distribution of islands and coastal regions. The average amount of marine waste collected over the past three years alone has reached 5,540 tons per year.
An official from Incheon City said, "The marine waste issue requires continuous management and effort," and added, "We will strive to create a cleaner coast off Incheon through systematic project implementation and public-private cooperation."
