U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned Iran on the 16th (local time), stating, "If you make the wrong choice and refuse to reach an agreement, our military is fully prepared to resume combat operations," adding, "I hope the new Iranian regime will make a wise decision."

At a press briefing on military operations against Iran held at the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. that day, Secretary Hegseth said, "We are watching you. This is not a fair fight," reiterating his warning to Iran.

Regarding Iran’s claim to control the Strait of Hormuz, Secretary Hegseth stated, "Threatening to launch missiles and drones at merchant vessels that are lawfully navigating international waters means you are not controlling anything." He further emphasized, "That is not control; it is piracy and an act of terrorism."

He added, "We prefer to resolve this amicably through an agreement. Otherwise, we are prepared to respond forcefully," and urged, "We call on this new regime to make a wise choice."
