As geopolitical risks from the Middle East and the spread of protectionism increase uncertainty in the shipping market, the Korea Maritime Promotion Corporation has joined forces with domestic shipping companies to develop response strategies.

The Korea Maritime Promotion Corporation announced that it held the "Shipping Company CEO Conference" at the Koreana Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, over two days from April 15 to 16. This event was organized to explore response measures for the shipping industry amid expanding external variables such as the Middle East conflict, changes in the trade environment following the launch of the second Trump administration, and the strengthening of regulations in China.

At the conference, experts from various fields diagnosed the key risks facing the shipping industry and proposed response strategies. Eunyeong Lee, Managing Director of Samil PwC, emphasized, "Supply chain restructuring and increased freight rate volatility are being driven by the reinforcement of protectionist policies and the prolonged geopolitical risks. In an environment where uncertainty has become the norm, rapid decision-making and flexible strategic shifts will be critical factors for corporate survival."

Jaein Ahn, Senior Managing Director at BNP Paribas Securities, pointed out that instability in the Middle East is increasing inflationary pressure, resulting in greater volatility in interest rates and exchange rates. He advised, "Domestic shipping companies need to establish proactive response strategies to secure financial soundness."

Dukjung Son, Partner Attorney at Jipyong LLC, discussed China's revisions to the Foreign Trade Law, the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, and the Export Control Law, stating, "With the intensifying US-China hegemonic competition and the bloc-ization of supply chains, it is necessary to establish a systematic response system to manage the risks of Chinese regulations and sanctions."

Following the expert lectures, the Korea Maritime Promotion Corporation introduced its major ongoing projects and listened to on-site challenges and policy recommendations from domestic shipping companies.

Byunggil Ahn, President of the Korea Maritime Promotion Corporation, stated, "The shipping market is currently experiencing unprecedented volatility amid prolonged geopolitical conflicts, the spread of protectionism, and concerns over a global economic slowdown. We will actively support the stable operation and competitiveness of domestic shipping companies through ship financing, market information provision, and the expansion of global cooperation networks."
