Pukyong National University Opens 'Quantum AI Research Institute', Launches Full-Scale Quantum-AI Convergence Research

Pukyong National University held the opening ceremony of the Quantum AI Research Institute at the Natural Sciences Building 1 on the 14th.


The university announced on the 16th that following a commemorative lecture that day, it has officially begun research activities. This marks the first time in Korea that a university research institute has opened with a focus on the convergence of quantum technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The institute was established to promote research on quantum mechanics-based software and hardware, as well as multidisciplinary applied technologies. Going forward, it plans to foster talent through the convergence of quantum science and AI, serve as a regional innovation hub linked to national strategies, and pursue the creation of new industries and commercialization of technology in connection with strategic industries in the southeastern region.


The event was attended by Lee Yongho, Head of the Superconducting Quantum Computing System Research Group at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science; Ham Jaekyun, Head of the Quantum Computing Service Research Group at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information; and Paik Seungwook, Head of the Quantum Technology Division at the National Research Foundation of Korea, among others.


Woo Sangwook, head of the institute, stated, "When combined with AI, quantum technology has the potential to transform the structure of a wide range of industries, including high-energy physics, materials science, life sciences, as well as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, logistics, finance, and secondary batteries. We aim to achieve tangible results through collaboration among academia, industry, and research institutes."


President Bae Sanghoon said, "The Quantum AI Research Institute is a core foundation for ensuring future technological competitiveness. By consolidating the university's research capabilities, we will contribute to the advancement of national strategic technologies."


Following the opening ceremony, Lee Yongho delivered a commemorative lecture on "Current Status and Prospects of Quantum Computing Development."
