MyBrown Partners with Gangnam District Office to Provide Pet Insurance Support for Adopted Abandoned Animals

"Easing the Burden of Medical Expenses After Adoption"

MyBrown Pet Insurance, a company specializing in pet insurance, announced on April 16 that it will participate in the "Abandoned Animal Safety Insurance" support program being implemented by the Gangnam District Office in Seoul starting this month.

The two organizations signed a business agreement on April 8 and are currently working together on the project.

This initiative was launched to reduce the burden of medical expenses that may arise after adoption and to encourage the adoption of abandoned animals.

The financial burden associated with raising pets continues to be cited as a major reason why people hesitate to adopt.

According to MyBrown, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' "2025 National Survey on Animal Welfare Awareness" found that 35.2% of respondents cited "higher-than-expected expenses" as a reason for considering giving up or abandoning their pets. This indicates that economic challenges are a significant factor making pet ownership difficult.

The Abandoned Animal Safety Insurance program provides Gangnam residents who adopt abandoned animals through animal protection centers operated or commissioned by public institutions with full coverage of annual insurance premiums, worth approximately 160,000 won per animal. Eligibility is limited to those who complete microchip animal registration after adoption, and applications will be accepted from this month until the budget is depleted. The program will also be retroactively applied to households that adopted abandoned animals between January and March this year.

Under this program, the Gangnam District Office acts as the insurance policyholder, while families who adopt abandoned animals receive the coverage. MyBrown is responsible for the planning and operation of the insurance product, supporting the substantial reduction of medical expenses that may arise after adoption.

This insurance is designed as a non-underwritten policy that allows enrollment regardless of the animal’s age or previous medical history, reflecting the unique characteristics of abandoned animals. It covers treatment costs for injury or illness up to 150,000 won per day and surgery costs up to 2 million won. In addition, it provides liability coverage for damages caused to others, up to 10 million won per incident.

MyBrown emphasized the significance of this project, noting that it is the first case among Seoul’s 25 districts where Gangnam District has allocated its own budget to revive the abandoned animal insurance support program after the city-level initiative ended.

The two organizations also plan to conduct joint promotional activities to foster a culture of adopting abandoned animals, using this insurance support as a springboard. Through these efforts, they aim to reduce the abandonment of pets due to post-adoption care burdens and help establish a culture of responsible pet ownership.

Lee Yonghwan, CEO of MyBrown, stated, "It is meaningful that we have established a support system that can substantially reduce the burden of medical expenses after adopting abandoned animals through insurance. We will continue to explore various support models in collaboration with public institutions to help create an environment where pets and their owners can live together more securely."
