Nam June Paik's video installation work 'Dr. Kim Hwallan' and Lee Ufan's 'Correspondence' series, among others, are set to find new owners.
On April 16, Seoul Auction announced that it will hold the '191st Art Auction' at 4 p.m. on April 28 at the Seoul Auction Gangnam Center. A total of 141 pieces, spanning both modern and contemporary art and traditional art, will be up for auction, with the combined low estimate totaling approximately 8.8 billion won.
In the modern and contemporary art section, Nam June Paik's 1997 work 'Dr. Kim Hwallan' will be auctioned. Inspired by Kim Hwallan, the first Korean woman to earn a doctorate, the piece reinterprets the subject and history by departing from traditional portrait formats and utilizing objects such as radios and televisions.
Lee Bae's 'Issu du Feu (White Lines) W-42' will also be on the auction block. This piece highlights tension on the canvas through the contrast between the black texture of charcoal and the white drawn lines.
A special section titled 'Modern Perspectives' will spotlight modern Korean art. This section features works by artists such as Jang Ukjin, Yoo Youngkuk, and Park Goseok, who exemplify the formative language of Korean art from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Additionally, Lee Ufan's 'Correspondence' and Olafur Eliasson's 'Square Sphere' will be presented at the auction.
The traditional art section will offer paintings, calligraphy, and ceramics. Lee Sangbeom's 'Twelve Scenic Views of Mount Geumgang' depicts the four seasons of twelve famous spots in Mount Geumgang, and a 'Blue and White Porcelain Jar with Rock and Bird Design' will also be auctioned.
The preview exhibition will be held free of charge at Seoul Auction Gangnam Center from April 18 to April 28, ahead of the auction.
