Pohang City Launches Aging Tech Convergence Platform Project... "Advancing Integrated Care with Technology"

Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence and POSTECH to Participate in Six-Month Research Project
Pursuing Strategies for Linking Industry and Welfare through Development of Integrated Care Models

In response to the super-aged society, Pohang City held a kick-off meeting for the "Pohang City Aging Tech Convergence Platform Development Research Project" in the medium conference room at Pohang City Hall on the 16th, with the aim of establishing a technology-based integrated care system.

The meeting was attended by around 20 participants, including Kim Shin, Director of Welfare at Pohang City, and heads of relevant departments. They shared the direction of the research project, discussed key tasks, and gathered feedback for incorporating the outcomes into policy.

This research project will be conducted over six months, from April to September 2026, with a total budget of 80 million won. It will be jointly carried out by the Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence (KIRO) and the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation.

The main tasks include: ▲ assessing the feasibility of establishing an aging tech convergence platform; ▲ identifying ways to utilize care robots that reflect local care needs; and ▲ preparing application models and implementation systems linked to integrated care policies.

Pohang City has determined that, given the rapid aging of the population and increase in single-person households which have led to a surge in care needs, there are limits to responding with the existing workforce-centered care system alone. As a result, the city plans to proactively establish an aging tech-based care system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and data technologies.

This research project will especially focus on developing practical models that can be applied on the ground by combining integrated care systems-linking medical, nursing, and welfare services-with aging tech.

Kim Shin, Director of Welfare, stated, "The goal of this research project is to advance the existing care system by leveraging aging tech, including AI and robotics. Through technology-based care, we aim to close service gaps and create an environment where citizens can continue to live safely in their own communities."

Meanwhile, Pohang City plans to gradually implement the construction of the aging tech convergence platform based on the results of this research, and in the future, develop it as a new growth model that combines local industry and care policies in connection with national government projects.
