With the Democratic Party of Korea selecting Assemblyman Suhyun Park as its candidate for the upcoming June 3 local elections for South Chungcheong Province Governor, the matchups between the ruling and opposition parties are now set. Another point of interest is whether a by-election will be held in Park's constituency of Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang in South Chungcheong Province.
Assemblyman Park secured the nomination after defeating former South Chungcheong Province Governor Yang Seungjo in the party’s final vote held from April 13 to 15. On April 16, his first official schedule after being confirmed as the candidate was a visit to the Hyunchungsa Shrine in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. He then moved on to Cheonan to hold a roundtable with the Startup Campus.
Born in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, Assemblyman Park has served two terms in the National Assembly and previously held positions as spokesperson and Senior Secretary for Public Communication at the Blue House. He is widely regarded in and outside the media as a "master of communication."
In the main election, Park will face off against the incumbent governor, Taeheum Kim, who was nominated as the sole candidate by the People Power Party. Political circles are paying close attention to when Park will resign from his Assembly seat. According to the current Public Official Election Act, he must resign by April 30 for a by-election to be held.
The region of Gongju, Buyeo, and Cheongyang holds significant symbolic and political influence in South Chungcheong Province. The People Power Party is already working hard to prepare a pool of candidates in anticipation of a possible by-election. The Democratic Party must now search for a "post-Park Suhyun" figure. If Park delays his resignation and a by-election is not held, there could be political criticism, which is an additional variable to consider.
It is known that Assemblyman Park is planning to decide on the timing of his resignation without delay, but this issue requires discussions with the party leadership. In a phone interview with The Asia Business Daily, Park said regarding the timing of his resignation, "I have my own thoughts, but since this is closely linked to the party's strategic nominations, I will make a decision after closely communicating with the party going forward."
