NASSCO, based in San Diego, California, is the shipbuilding subsidiary of General Dynamics. Since the 1950s, it has delivered more than 150 U.S. Navy support ships and commercial vessels. It is the only shipyard on the U.S. West Coast capable of handling the entire process from design and construction to repair.
This visit appears to demonstrate both companies’ commitment to successfully carrying out the U.S. Navy’s next-generation logistics support ship project and to expanding their collaborative areas from design to automation technologies.
After practical discussions, the executives from both companies toured Samsung Heavy Industries’ in-house factory, which is equipped with the latest automation technologies, as well as the safety and painting VR experience center. Samsung Heavy Industries aims to expand its technology exports as a “solution provider” by collaborating with NASSCO not only in ship design and construction support but also in robotics transformation (RX). Meanwhile, NASSCO seeks to proactively secure the competitiveness of the U.S. shipbuilding industry. Samsung Heavy Industries stated that it plans to further develop and expand the partnership between the two companies to include the U.S. commercial shipping market.
Seong-An Choi, Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy Industries, said, “The visit of NASSCO’s executive team, which plays a pivotal role in the U.S. shipbuilding industry, has further strengthened the strategic partnership between the two companies. The combination of NASSCO’s production infrastructure and Samsung Heavy Industries’ automation and smart technologies will make a substantial contribution to the advancement of the shipbuilding industries in both countries.”
David Carver, President of NASSCO, stated, “I am pleased to visit Samsung Heavy Industries, which boasts world-class shipbuilding capabilities and systems. The cooperation between our two companies will create significant synergies for the shipbuilding industries of both Korea and the United States, and we will strengthen our collaboration so that this technological advancement can benefit the next generation in a tangible way.”
