SM Vexcel, a manufacturing and service affiliate of SM Group, has joined hands with a leading drone solutions company to advance related battery technologies.
On April 16, the SM Vexcel Battery Division announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vololand for the joint development of core drone components and power systems. The two companies plan to collaborate on developing batteries and power systems essential for enhancing drone flight control, with the goal of launching next-generation drone platforms and accelerating their foray into the global market.

원본보기 아이콘Vololand is a full-stack company that integrates all processes, from drone design to production, using domestically developed technology. The SM Vexcel Battery Division expects that by combining its expertise in batteries and energy with Vololand's precision drone control and autonomous flight technology, they can generate synergy and establish a "domestic full-stack ecosystem."
Specifically, the companies agreed to cooperate comprehensively in the following areas: development of high-performance batteries and battery management systems (BMS) for drones; development of high-output, high-efficiency power supply systems and long-endurance flight technologies; integrated establishment of drone stations (facilities and equipment necessary for drone takeoff and landing) with automatic charging and replacement systems; and optimized power design for industrial drones, including those used in defense applications.
Notably, the first project under the MOU will be the launch-within this year-of batteries and power systems for mid- to large-sized agricultural drones, a development project led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to promote the localization of drone technology. The two companies also plan to sign a supply contract. This is strategically significant, as it aims to restructure the drone ecosystem by localizing production of core components and technology, moving away from the current global market structure dominated by China.
Choi Sehwahn, CEO of the SM Vexcel Battery Division, stated, "We will provide differentiated solutions by leading with highly reliable and efficient battery technology required in the drone industry. In 2024, we began commercializing battery packs for delivery drones, and we are now developing battery packs for military training and unmanned armored vehicle drones in the defense sector. We will continue to expand our business areas accordingly."
Meanwhile, the SM Vexcel Battery Division is well known for its primary battery brand Bexel (alkaline, etc.) and produces and sells specialized batteries and battery packs for industrial and military use. In February, the company successfully supplied lithium ampoule batteries for 230mm-class unguided rockets for the Cheonmu (K-239, Korean Multiple Launch Rocket System), a core weapon system of K-defense, proving its technological prowess and supply capability.
