The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on April 15 that it will proactively support local governments with a heatwave countermeasure fund totaling 30 billion won, which is double the amount provided last year.
In response to increasingly severe summer heatwaves caused by recent climate change, the Ministry will significantly increase the heatwave countermeasure fund from last year’s 15 billion won to 30 billion won this year, providing this support to local governments in order to reduce harm to the public.
The allocated heatwave countermeasure fund will be used to expand heat mitigation facilities (such as shade canopies), provide heatwave prevention supplies for outdoor workers (including bottled water and cooling sleeves), and manage and operate cooling shelters.
In particular, protective measures for those especially vulnerable to heatwaves, such as seniors living alone and residents of single-room dwellings, will be strengthened. Monitoring and awareness campaigns to prevent heat-related illnesses will also be expanded.
Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung stated, “As summer heatwaves become longer and more intense, it is time for much stronger preventive measures that far exceed previous levels.”
Minister Yoon also said, “We will pay close attention to those most vulnerable to heatwaves and spare no effort in providing the necessary support to prevent heat-related harm.”
