Sacheon City, which has emerged as a key hub for South Korea's aerospace industry, is set to establish future strategies to advance as an aerospace-focused city.
Sacheon City announced that, in partnership with the Department of Aerospace Technology Management at Gyeongsang National University, it will host the 3rd Sacheon City Corporate Forum on May 6, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., in the Medium Lecture Hall on the third floor of the Sacheon GNU Science Park.
This forum will serve as a platform for cooperation and communication aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of local industries and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth. It will target business representatives and executives from the Sacheon area, university students and faculty, as well as citizens.
In particular, this is the first forum to be held since the launch of the Korea Aerospace Administration, making it especially significant. It is seen as a turning point, demonstrating that previously fragmented, sector-focused industrial discussions are now being directly linked to national policy.
The theme of the forum is "Building a Regional Innovation Ecosystem for the Korea Aerospace Administration." As Sacheon City is currently gaining attention as the center of South Korea's aerospace industry, timely discussions are expected to take place.
The Korea Aerospace Administration is evaluated as a key institution serving as the national control tower for research and development, industry promotion, and policy coordination. It is expected to drive the agglomeration effect of related companies, talent, and infrastructure. Such clustering is likely to lead to the creation of collaboration networks, technological innovation, and increased new investments.
Sacheon City is pursuing the advancement of its industrial structure by adding the space sector to its existing aviation industry base. The city is transitioning from a simple manufacturing focus to a high-value-added industrial city encompassing research and development, services, and data industries.
At this forum, Deputy Director Noh Kyungwon will give a presentation outlining policy directions and strategies for building a regionally connected industrial ecosystem. Key topics will include expanding corporate participation, models for industry-academia-research collaboration, the training of specialized professionals, and support for technology commercialization.
The role of local universities is also highlighted. Gyeongsang National University, centering on the Department of Aerospace Technology Management, is actively nurturing talent tailored to industry demands and serving as an intermediary hub connecting research and development with technology commercialization.
Companies are also undergoing significant changes. Existing aviation parts manufacturers are expanding into the space sector, and the influx of startups and venture firms is leading to the formation of a multi-layered industrial ecosystem.
The forum is also expected to serve as a stage for field-oriented policy design. As companies face a range of challenges such as technology development, securing talent, and regulatory improvements, there has been a continuous call for practical discussions that reflect on-the-ground voices in policy.
An official from Sacheon City stated, "It is most important to establish support policies that companies can truly feel," adding, "We will actively incorporate the opinions presented at the forum and connect them to effective policies."
Sacheon City is accelerating its transformation into an "aerospace industry hub city" by pursuing multifaceted strategies such as attracting companies, expanding research and development infrastructure, fostering specialized talent, and improving residential conditions.
In particular, Sacheon GNU Science Park is establishing itself as a core hub where companies, research institutes, and universities collaborate.
Experts are paying attention to the potential for Sacheon to grow beyond a simple industrial complex into an innovative cluster where industry, education, research, and policy are organically connected. There is keen interest in whether this forum will mark the starting point for a transformation in South Korea's aerospace industry landscape.
