Hongcheon County Begins Full Operation of 'Eco-Friendly Cremation Scattering Site'... Leading a New Funeral Culture

Hongcheon County in Gangwon Province announced on April 15 that it has completed the establishment of a cremation scattering site within the Hongcheon County Memorial Park and has begun full-scale operation.

The newly established cremation scattering site is located at San 130-4, Haoan-ri, Hongcheon-eup, and covers a total area of 1,828 square meters.

To provide a pleasant and dignified memorial environment, Hongcheon County has created green spaces and installed memorial shelters, along with other convenience facilities.

Cremation scattering is a form of natural burial in which the ashes from cremation are scattered in a designated area. This practice was legalized starting January 2025.

Eligibility for use is granted to individuals who, as of the date of death, have been registered as residents of Hongcheon County for at least one year and actually reside there, as well as their parents, spouses, or children. Additionally, it applies to veterans recognized under Article 4 of the Act on the Honorable Treatment and Support of Persons of Distinguished Services to the State, who are registered as residents of Hongcheon County as of the date of death.

The usage fee, including maintenance and service charges, is set at 100,000 won, ensuring that funerals can be conducted without financial burden.

Applications to use the cremation scattering site can be made by visiting or calling the Hongcheon County Memorial Park. Those wishing to scatter ashes after using cremation facilities, as well as those seeking to scatter the remains of deceased individuals whose enshrinement period at the existing memorial park has expired, may also apply.

An official from Hongcheon County stated, "Through the operation of the cremation scattering site, we expect to lead the way in establishing an eco-friendly and sustainable funeral culture, moving away from conventional practices such as burial and enshrinement." The official added, "As the rapid aging of society increases interest in environmentally friendly and economical funeral options, Hongcheon County will take the lead in promoting new funeral culture."

Meanwhile, Hongcheon County plans to continuously monitor the operation of the cremation scattering site and actively promote public awareness among residents.
