Seongbuk-gu in Seoul will run a humanities program titled "Spatial Sympathy, Simwoojang" at Simwoojang, the former residence of independence activist Han Yong-un, from May to October.
Simwoojang is a historic site built and inhabited by Han Yong-un himself, with traces of his independence movement activities and exchanges with other patriots. Every year, Seongbuk-gu collaborates with relevant organizations to operate humanities programs utilizing this space.
This year, the program consists of four sub-programs. In May and September, "Simwoojang, Ordinary Days"-which allows participants to experience Han's daily life through peach blossom food therapy-will be open to the general public and families (participation fee: KRW 5,000 per person). From June to July, "Space for Communication, Simwoojang Aeseo" will be held, in which young people read Han Yong-un’s literary works aloud to produce audiobooks for the visually impaired.
On August 14 and 15, the "Humanities Poem Signal Simwoojang" concert will take place at the old house, combining poetry, music, and a flash mob. In October, a climate change response program called "Harmony in Seongbuk" will offer a tour of modern traditional houses in Seongbuk-dong with an architectural expert, as well as a zero-waste experience.
Applications for participation can be made through the website of the organizing body, Culture With You The Bom Co., Ltd. (www.culturethebom.com), as well as their blog, Kakao channel, and social networking services (SNS).
A Seongbuk-gu official said, "We hope this will provide citizens with an opportunity to experience the history and culture of old houses, and to feel Han Yong-un's spirit of independence and his literary philosophy."
