The Gyeonggi Provincial Government is launching the second phase of its "Cloud Computing System Development Project" to improve the speed and scalability of administrative services.
On April 15, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced that it would push forward with the second phase of the project, shifting the information systems of public institutions from the conventional "department ownership" model to a "service-based" structure that allows resources to be used as needed. The goal is to establish a foundation for delivering faster and more stable administrative services.
In the first phase of the project last year, the province established a cloud conversion foundation for 57 work systems, including Gyeonggi Civil Service 24 and the Gyeonggi News Portal. In addition, a management system was implemented to monitor system speed and stability, and a Kubernetes-based open-source architecture was adopted to avoid dependence on specific companies or technologies.
This year's second phase focuses on service improvement and expanded utilization. The province plans to migrate 21 additional systems to the cloud, including the Gyeonggi Integrated Website (gg.go.kr), and expand server capacity to ensure stable operation even in the event of increased user demand.
In particular, the integrated website will be revamped with a "cloud-native" approach. This structure modularizes services by function, allowing for quick modifications or the addition of new features as needed. As a result, it can flexibly respond to evolving administrative demands. The province aims to enhance the speed and convenience of frequently used online services for residents through this initiative.
Additionally, the government will strengthen its data backup and disaster recovery systems to enable rapid restoration in the event of system failures and build an integrated inspection system to manage all systems collectively.
The scope of cloud adoption will also be expanded. Unlike the first phase, which focused mainly on internal systems, the second phase will establish a foundation for the province's public institutions and municipal governments to jointly utilize cloud resources. In the future, Gyeonggi plans to increase information resource efficiency by linking its proprietary public cloud with public cloud services.
Kim Kibyeong, Director of AI at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government, stated, "Last year, we laid the groundwork for a public cloud infrastructure and open-source-based architecture. This year, we will focus on expanding cloud services and enhancing operational stability," adding, "By transitioning to a cloud-native environment, we will establish an administrative foundation that can swiftly respond to evolving AI demands."
