On April 14, Gwangmyeong City announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the "Gwangmyeong Citizen Health and Sports Center" at the site of the former Cheolsan-dong Nodutdol Office (379 Cheolsan-dong) and officially commenced construction.

The Gwangmyeong Citizen Health and Sports Center will be a comprehensive sports facility equipped with a swimming pool, a multi-purpose gymnasium, and several multi-purpose rooms, serving as a sports welfare space for all generations.

With a project budget of KRW 40.7 billion, the center will be built with a total floor area of approximately 7,600 square meters, consisting of two basement levels and seven above-ground floors. Completion is scheduled for September 2028.

This project is significant in that it repurposes an outdated public office building into a sports facility for citizens’ health and leisure, thereby increasing the value of public infrastructure utilization.

In particular, the swimming pool-one of the most highly demanded facilities among residents-will be located on the fourth floor above ground (25 meters long, five lanes), rather than in the basement, providing ample natural light and a comfortable, open environment for exercise.

Additionally, four multi-purpose rooms will be installed on the fifth floor, and a multi-purpose gymnasium (for basketball, badminton, etc.) will be located on the sixth floor.

The second floor will be designed as an open community space accessible to all citizens. Outfitted with rest areas, lounges, and convenience facilities, it will serve as a lifestyle-friendly space where people can comfortably stay not only before and after exercise but also as part of their daily lives.

Hye-min Choi, Acting Mayor of Gwangmyeong City (Deputy Mayor), stated, "We will build a safe and substantial urban sports hub where citizens can connect with each other and find new energy in their lives," adding, "We will continue to expand the infrastructure for daily sports activities so that everyone can enjoy sports close to home."
