The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dispatched special envoys of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and senior government officials to Algeria, Libya, and Congo to respond to the energy crisis caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 14th, "Park Jonghan, Economic Diplomacy Coordinator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is in Algeria and Libya from the 13th to the 17th," adding, "For the inauguration ceremony of President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, we plan to dispatch former Ambassador to Algeria, Jeong Haeung, as a special envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs."
The official further explained, "We are intensifying diplomatic efforts to diversify our sources of energy supply," and that "as part of these efforts, we are in Algeria and Libya to explore supply and demand conditions and possibilities for cooperation, including in crude oil and naphtha."
Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun also stated at a State Council and Emergency Economic Review Meeting presided over by President Lee Jaemyung that "(Kang Hoonshik) the chief of staff has been dispatched to the Middle East as a special envoy, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also sent director-level officials to Algeria and Libya," and "we are planning to dispatch a special envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Republic of Congo."
Additionally, former Ambassador Jeong Haeung is known as an Africa expert, having visited Algeria as a special envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2013 and visited Tunisia and Mauritania in 2024 in the same capacity. Park Jonghan, Economic Diplomacy Coordinator, is an expert in the field of economy and trade, having served as First Secretary at the Embassy of Korea in the United States, Director for FTA Implementation, Minister-Counselor at the Permanent Delegation of Korea to the OECD, and Director-General for Development Cooperation.
