[Issue] "Will You Lose 1 Million Won?"... Wedding Halls Pressure Engaged Couples with Hardball Tactics

Reservation Disappears Right After Consultation, Customers Pressured by Psychological Tactics
Unwanted Time Slots Forced While Venue Insists on "Policy"
Venue Explains: "Fully Booked Even Without Tricks... Not a Fake Listing"

"I called ahead to confirm, but by the end of the consultation, they told me the slot was already booked. Is it really a consultation when they push you to take an undesirable time slot and say you’ll lose the benefits if you don’t act now? That feels more like intimidation than advice."

Mr. A (31), who is set to get married in November next year, recently visited a well-known wedding hall in Seo-gu, Gwangju, only to have a frustrating and unpleasant experience. He had been told that he could reserve the coveted "golden time slot," but as the consultation was wrapping up, he was abruptly informed that "the slot was just booked." Instead, the wedding hall staff pressured the engaged couple to sign a contract for a less popular time slot, using the promise of "same-day contract benefits" as leverage.

"Just Sold Out" ... Sales Tactics Resembling Fake Listings in Used Car Markets

Mr. A visited the venue for a wedding scheduled for 2 p.m. on a Saturday in early November 2027-more than a year and a half away-in hopes of securing what’s known as the "peak time" slot. He started his search early to get this prime slot.

Before the consultation began, the staff emphasized, "The moment the consultation starts, the same-day contract benefits apply. If you don’t sign today, you’ll never get benefits worth 1 million won again." This tactic sets a psychological guideline upfront, creating pressure on the customer.

After a quick tour of the hall and a run-through of meal costs, the consultation was nearly complete, with only the contract left to sign. At that point, the staff member’s attitude changed suddenly. While checking the monitor, the staff apologized and said, "The slot was just booked during our consultation." Instead, the venue offered a replacement: a 6 p.m. slot in December-one of the least desirable times for most couples.

Mr. A expressed his anger, saying, "It felt like the fake listings tactic in the used car market. They lure you in with good conditions, then tell you the offer is gone and try to offload whatever is left."

Pushing Unpopular Slots Using the "1 Million Won Benefit" as Bait

The bigger problem, Mr. A said, was the wedding hall’s brazen response. When he refused the 6 p.m. slot, the venue insisted, "Even if this isn’t the time you want, since the consultation has started, the same-day benefits will disappear if you don’t sign today."

The wedding hall’s same-day contract benefits reportedly include services like professional emcee arrangements, valued at about 1 million won. With total wedding costs running into tens of millions of won, 1 million won is a difficult amount for an engaged couple to give up.

Mr. A expressed his frustration: "They started the consultation based on the golden time slot, but after missing the reservation themselves, they shifted the burden of losing the benefits onto the customer." The only response he received from the wedding hall was, "It’s company policy. There’s nothing we can do."

Mr. A argues this is effectively a "bundling" tactic to fill undesirable slots in the early morning or late evening. By using popular times as bait to get customers in the door, they exploit psychological mechanisms to pressure them into accepting unfavorable contract terms.

When contacted by this newspaper, a representative from the wedding hall strongly denied the "fake listing" allegations. The venue stated, "This is such a popular place that slots are often booked in real time. Even without any tricks, we’re always fully booked."

The representative added, "We apologize for any discomfort caused from the customer’s perspective, but the same-day benefits apply equally to everyone, and we cannot make exceptions for a specific case, as we must adhere to company policy."
