As concerns over the supply of pay-as-you-throw waste bags continued, Osan City in Gyeonggi Province responded by assuring residents that “sufficient quantities have been secured.” The city explained that the current restrictions on sales will remain in place only until the end of this month, after which purchases will once again be allowed without limitation starting next month.
The city currently holds a stockpile of pay-as-you-throw bags sufficient for over five months of use. Production is also continuing without interruption, so there is no immediate risk of supply being cut off.
However, due to growing concerns about the supply of raw materials and a recent surge in demand, the city has decided to temporarily control the quantity supplied until the end of this month. The city believes that if people continue to purchase more than they need in advance, confusion could arise at distribution sites.
The situation is expected to stabilize further at the end of this month when additional supplies arrive. Taking this as an opportunity, the city plans to lift the current quota system starting next month and resume unrestricted sales as before.
The city has also decided not to raise prices for the time being. This decision was made in consideration of the ongoing burden of rising prices, as any increase in the cost of pay-as-you-throw bags could further heighten the financial strain felt by citizens.
Gwonjae Lee, Mayor of Osan City, stated, “We are doing our utmost to secure sufficient supplies to ensure the stable provision of pay-as-you-throw bags,” adding, “The city will do everything possible to manage supply so that citizens do not experience any inconvenience.”
