Sinan County in South Jeolla Province has embarked on expanding local processing facilities to strengthen the competitiveness of the seaweed industry.

The county announced that on April 9, it signed a business agreement with Gamro Seafood English Cooperative Corporation for the construction of a new dry seaweed processing plant.

This project is being promoted as part of the 'Jeonnam Region Fisheries Products Production and Distribution Center (FPC) Construction' initiative. A total of 15 billion won will be invested to establish a processing facility with two production lines in the Aphe-eup area.

Through this project, the county plans to create an integrated system that connects production, processing, and distribution at the local level, thereby increasing the added value of the seaweed industry.

In particular, by stably securing a supply of fresh seaweed produced in the region through contract farming and linking it to processing, the project is expected to help secure sales channels and stabilize prices. It is also anticipated to contribute to solving the recurring issues of falling fresh seaweed prices and mass disposal.

The company in question is a seafood food business located in Haenam County. Over the past two years, it has achieved sales of approximately 23 billion won, with most of its products exported to overseas markets such as the United States, earning recognition for its competitiveness. The company also holds international certifications including USDA, HACCP, Organic Processed Food Certification, and SQF, and is regarded as meeting global food safety standards.

With this agreement, the county also expects to see positive effects on the local economy, such as increasing the income of seaweed farmers and creating new jobs.

A county official stated, "We will build an industry structure that links production, processing, and export to enhance the competitiveness of Sinan's fisheries products," adding, "We will also continue to expand our foundation for entering the global market."

Meanwhile, Sinan was selected for this year's Fisheries Products Production and Distribution Center (FPC) construction project, further accelerating the establishment of a seaweed industry distribution hub.
