A man in his 50s who concealed vehicle ownership and received over 80 million won in basic living subsidies has been given a suspended prison sentence.
On April 14, Judge Kim Jeongjin of the Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 8 announced that Mr. A, who was tried on charges of violating the National Basic Living Security Act, was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
Mr. A actually owned and operated a car, but registered the vehicle under another person’s name and applied for basic living subsidies at the local district office. As a result, he received approximately 75 million won over five years starting from July 2019, before being caught.
Using the same method, Mr. A also fraudulently obtained about 7.5 million won in single-parent family support benefits.
The court stated, “The period and amount of the fraudulent subsidies are considerable,” adding, “The sentence took into account the fact that the defendant admitted his wrongdoing, as well as his age and circumstances.”
