The interior of the aging Busan Intercity Bus Terminal will be completely renovated.
On April 14, the Busan Metropolitan Government announced that it has begun improvement work on the Busan Intercity Bus Terminal as part of a "Universal Design Pilot Project" in collaboration with the Busan Design Promotion Agency.
The core of this project is to implement "design for all," making the terminal accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, age, or physical condition.
The Busan Intercity Bus Terminal is a major transportation hub used by approximately 5.8 million people annually. However, continued complaints have been raised about user inconvenience due to aging facilities.
The city will overhaul the guidance system, focusing on users’ movement paths. Boarding platforms, ticket counters, and route information signage will be intuitively reorganized, and color schemes and wording will be standardized to reduce confusion.
Waiting areas will also be reconfigured. The efficiency of space in the waiting hall and boarding platforms will be improved, and nursing rooms will be relocated and remodeled to enhance accessibility and convenience.
Vacant spaces that have been left unused for a long time will be turned into a book cafe to serve as a rest area. A new bus boarding area will also be installed for wheelchair users.
A key feature of this project is that it reflects on-site opinions through the "Citizen Empathy Design Group," which involves citizen participation. Even after the renovation is complete, the Busan Metropolitan Government plans to continue improving the terminal by collecting and analyzing operational data.
Hyungjun Park, Mayor of Busan, emphasized, "The spatial innovation of the Busan Intercity Bus Terminal is not just about improving facilities; it marks the starting point of inclusion by considering the mobility of all users." He added, "We will continue to spread universal design throughout the public sector, befitting a city selected as World Design Capital (WDC)."
