CNN reported on the 13th (local time) that the United States and Iran are considering holding a second round of talks before the ceasefire period expires. There is growing optimism for a breakthrough, as working-level dialogue between the two countries continues and mediating nations are making ongoing efforts to resume talks.
Citing U.S. government sources, CNN stated, "There are internal discussions underway about holding a second face-to-face meeting before the ceasefire period ends on April 21," adding, "The United States and Iran are still continuing negotiations as they seek ways to end the war through diplomatic means." While a specific date and location have not yet been set, CNN reported that Geneva, Switzerland, and Islamabad are currently being considered as possible venues for the talks.
Bloomberg News, also citing sources who requested anonymity, reported, "Returning to Islamabad for the second meeting between the United States and Iran is being discussed, although other locations are also under consideration." The sources also noted that the Iranian side does not expect all differences to be resolved through a single meeting.
It is also known that Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt, which mediated during the first round of talks between the United States and Iran, are continuing their mediation efforts. Bloomberg News stated that "there is also a possibility that the upcoming talks could be held in either Turkey or Egypt."
U.S. President Donald Trump, who previously sought a counter-blockade in response to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, also indicated the possibility of resuming dialogue with Iran. At a press conference earlier in the day, President Trump commented on the issue of resuming negotiations with Iran, saying, "What I can say is that we received a call from the other side," and emphasized, "They are very eager to reach an agreement."
