UN Secretary-General: "All Parties Must Respect Freedom of Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz"

As the United States launched a counter-blockade in the Strait of Hormuz against Iran, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on April 13 (local time) that all parties involved at the United Nations must respect the freedom of navigation.

On this day, Secretary-General Guterres, through a statement released by spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, emphasized, "All parties involved in this conflict must respect the freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law."

He stated, "We must not forget that around 20,000 seafarers have become entangled in this conflict, currently isolated on their vessels and facing increasing hardship with each passing day."

Meanwhile, Secretary-General Guterres, regarding recent ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran, commented, "The mere fact that discussions are taking place demonstrates a serious commitment to engagement by both sides," and described it as "a positive and meaningful step towards resuming dialogue." He added, "At the same time, the ceasefire must be maintained without exception. All violations must cease."
