Gwanghwamun Square to Clean Statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin for Spring

Specialized Personnel and Equipment Deployed for Two Days, June 13-14
From High-Pressure Washing to Manual Cleaning with Special Solvents

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 13th that it will conduct restoration and cleaning work to preserve the original form of the statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin at Gwanghwamun Square.


This project will be carried out from 8 a.m. on this day until 5 p.m. on the 14th. The statues, which have accumulated heavy layers of yellow dust and fine particulate matter, will undergo a four-step cleaning process, including water washing and foreign substance removal, to manage and maintain their condition.

First, an initial cleaning will be performed by using a neutral detergent with a low-pressure washer and a soft cloth to remove the surface grime. Next, remaining contaminants will be precisely removed using special solvents such as methanol, and finally, stripped areas will be recoated to prevent corrosion and preserve the original form.


Kim Changkyu, Director-General of Balanced Development at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "After the BTS concert, Gwanghwamun Square has emerged as a global landmark. We will carefully clean the statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin to ensure that citizens and tourists can enjoy them in a pleasant environment, and we will continue to enhance visitor satisfaction by maintaining Gwanghwamun Square in a more comfortable condition."
