The Candidate Recommendation Management Committee for Public Office Elections of the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Provincial Branch of the Democratic Party of Korea announced on April 9 the results of its screening for candidates for metropolitan and basic council seats in the 9th Nationwide Local Elections. With the screening process completed, the competition for party nominations has entered full swing.
The Jeonbuk Provincial Candidate Recommendation Committee stated that, on April 9, it determined candidate eligibility through an evaluation process that included both document reviews and interviews.
The screening criteria included morality, political identity, legislative work capability, and competitiveness in the main election.
There are a total of 35 metropolitan council electoral districts. Of these, 12 have a single recommended candidate, while the remaining 23 will determine their candidates through primary elections.
In the case of basic council constituencies, primaries will be held in a total of 68 districts. Depending on the district, the number of candidates competing ranges from at least 2 to as many as 7.
This round of screening has also broadened diversity in the pool of candidates, with 8 newcomers-including young and female political aspirants-added to the list.
For districts holding primaries, 100% of the vote will be determined by party members with voting rights. The detailed schedule and procedures will be announced sequentially through the Jeonbuk Provincial Branch website.
