Siheung City in Gyeonggi Province announced on April 9 that the Gyeonggi Siheung Southern Region Self-Sufficiency Center was selected for the "2026 Workplace Environment Improvement Support Project for Regional Self-Sufficiency Centers," hosted by the Korea Self-Sufficiency Welfare Development Institute on April 7, securing a total of 120 million won in funding.
This selection is regarded as an achievement that fulfills the purpose of self-sufficiency programs, which aim to support the independence of low-income residents and establish a sustainable employment base.
Regional self-sufficiency centers are social welfare facilities designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, based on the National Basic Living Security Act, to provide jobs and job training opportunities to low-income residents with the ability to work. Self-sufficiency programs are promoted to help participants become self-reliant by increasing their income and strengthening their vocational capabilities.
The Gyeonggi Siheung Southern Region Self-Sufficiency Center plans to systematically establish cooking, hygiene, and safety environments necessary for operating a new side dish store project group through this project. Participants will be able to develop practical skills such as cooking techniques, food ingredient management, hygiene management, and store operations, thereby building a foundation that can lead to future employment, entrepreneurship, or conversion to a self-sufficiency enterprise.
In addition, side dishes and lunch boxes produced in the improved environment will be provided in connection with Siheung City's public meal support service. This is expected to strengthen the local welfare safety net and, at the same time, provide hygienic and high-quality food not only to vulnerable groups but also to the general public, thereby contributing to public health promotion and the realization of public benefit.
Welfare Bureau Director Shim Yunsik stated, "Self-sufficiency programs are an important welfare policy that helps citizens build the power to become self-reliant," adding, "With this selection, the city will actively support the empowerment of self-sufficiency program participants and the creation of sustainable jobs."
