Normalization of Buniel Arts Middle and High School Nears... End of 27-Year Temporary Board System

Busan Office of Education Reaches Final Stage in Appointment of Regular Board Members
"Expecting Restoration of Core Educational Mission"

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is accelerating efforts to normalize Jeongseon Academy, a school foundation that has been under prolonged management issues.

According to the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Seokjun), the final stage has been reached in the process of appointing regular board members to transition Jeongseon Academy from a temporary board system, which has been in place for 27 years, to a regular board system.

The Office of Education plans to recommend 16 candidates for regular board membership to the Ministry of Education's Private School Dispute Mediation Committee by the 15th. This is a follow-up measure in response to the committee's conditional normalization decision.

During this time, the committee has resolved on conditional normalization measures premised on the settlement of outstanding debts. In the review held in March, the committee recognized in-kind contributions equivalent to debt repayment, which advanced discussions on normalization. It is also reported that, in accordance with this, the founders are currently proceeding with the transfer of real estate assets.

Since a student death incident occurred last year, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education has dispatched staff and provided comprehensive support and management across administration, personnel, and education to ensure student safety and protect the right to learn, as well as to normalize the foundation's operations.

At the committee meeting scheduled for the 27th, a review of the 16 recommended candidates will be conducted, and 7 regular board members will be finally appointed. Once the transition to a regular board system is completed, it is expected that the limitations of the temporary board system, such as restrictions on exercising property rights, will be overcome, thereby accelerating debt resolution and the normalization of the foundation's management.

The Office of Education stated that it will continue to supervise and monitor the foundation's overall operations even after the appointment of regular board members, to ensure the implementation of normalization.

Superintendent Kim Seokjun said, "Normalizing Jeongseon Academy is a historic task that must be carried out according to laws and principles," adding, "Through this process, we will lay the foundation for the school to overcome past disputes and focus on its original educational mission." He further emphasized, "Even after the appointment of regular board members, we will thoroughly manage the foundation to ensure transparent and sound operations."
