The Hongju Fortress History Museum has begun collecting artifacts to systematically preserve the region's history and culture in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the Byeongo Hongju Righteous Army.
Since January of this year, the museum has collected 126 artifacts through purchases, donations, and deposits. In 2026, marking the 120th anniversary of the 1906 Byeongo Hongju Righteous Army, the museum is planning a special exhibition.
The museum is focusing on collecting materials related to the Hongju Righteous Army.
Among this year’s acquisitions, weapons and document materials are drawing the most attention.
The collection includes a Type 38 rifle, which was the standard rifle of the Japanese Army from 1905 until just before the end of World War II in 1945, as well as percussion cap rifles and cavalry pistols used in the 19th century.
Notably, six items belonging to Bok-eum Lee Seol and An Byungchan, key figures of the Hongju Righteous Army, have also been collected.
An Byungchan’s memorial to the throne is particularly noteworthy because, unlike other righteous army leaders, he left behind no collected works or records.
A county official stated, “We have collected 126 artifacts in just three months,” adding, “With the continued interest and support of county residents, we will do our utmost to become a museum that contributes to the community through meaningful exhibitions and research.”
