Recruitment for Korea Children's Gugak Grand Festival Participants... New Jeongga Category Introduced

The Cultural Heritage Administration and the National Heritage Promotion Agency announced on April 3 that they will be accepting applications for the Korea Children's Gugak Grand Festival from June 5 to June 11.

This competition is designed to discover young talents in Korean traditional music. Supported by the authority of the Minister's Award, it has served as a gateway for nurturing future leaders in traditional arts.

This year, the jeongga (traditional vocal music) category has been introduced to promote genres that are at risk of fading. It will be held alongside the existing seven categories: wind instruments, string instruments, folk songs, byeongchang (singing while playing an instrument), dance, pansori, and pungmul (folk percussion ensemble).

The preliminary round will be held on July 5, and the finals on July 11, at the National Intangible Heritage Center in Seoul and the Korea Cultural House (KOUS). The total prize money is 18.8 million won, and the overall grand prize winner across all categories will receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award along with a prize of 1 million won.
