The Jeonju International Film Festival announced the ten films selected for its International Competition section on April 3.
The International Competition section features works by emerging directors who have made fewer than three feature-length films, presenting their films for the first time in Asia. From November last year to January this year, a total of 421 films from 70 countries were submitted for consideration. Among single countries, the United States had the highest number of entries with 44 films.
The most notable entry is "If I Go" (USA), directed by Walter Thompson-Hernandez. This film expands on the acclaimed short of the same name, which drew attention at Sundance, and dreamily explores the struggles of a Black boy living in the hood. "Stones and Feathers" (Turkey), directed by Ragıp T?rk, follows a mother's determined efforts to reclaim her child, who was sent to an orphanage while she was incarcerated.
"Chronovisor" (USA) is an intellectual mystery involving a reclusive scholar and a secret technology capable of recording the past. "The Night That Slowly Disappears" (Argentina) depicts the daily life of a protagonist whose life has become more difficult due to a career change, but who has grown closer to cinema, all rendered in romantic black-and-white imagery.
Director Hiromichi Nakao, who previously screened "Obake" at the Jeonju Film Festival, returns with his new film "Michiyuki: Voices of Time" (Japan), which tells the story of a young man who moves into an old house and explores the memories of the house, the village, and time itself. "After 6 Weeks" (Germany) portrays events surrounding a daughter who has six weeks to mourn after losing her mother.
Other featured works include the surreal documentary "Another Summer's Dream" (Spain/Lebanon), set against the backdrop of Beirut; "Songaji Inhyung" (India), a blend of fiction and documentary; "Fantasy" (France), where dreams and reality become entangled; and "Visitor" (Lithuania/Norway/Sweden), which explores a man's nostalgia upon returning to his hometown.
This year's Jeonju Film Festival will take place from April 29 to May 8 in venues throughout Jeonju, including Cinema Street.
