On April 1, Jeonju City held the "2026 Jeonbuk Sports Forum Seminar" at the Mind Research Hall of the Teacher Education Center at Jeonju National University of Education, where the city conducted an in-depth review of strategies for hosting the Olympics and the region's potential role. This event was co-hosted by the Jeonbuk Sports Forum, the Institute for Sports Memory and Culture, and Jeonju National University of Education, with support from Jeonju City.
More than 150 professors and experts in the field of sports from the Jeonbuk region attended the event. Presentations and discussions focused on the development of sports in Jeonbuk and strategies for hosting the Olympics, with a variety of opinions shared.
The key topics addressed at the seminar included the management direction of Olympic heritage, an assessment of Jeonju’s potential to host the Summer Olympics, and strategies to link Olympic legacy with urban regeneration. In particular, participants conducted a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the Olympics on revitalizing the local economy and strengthening urban competitiveness, focusing on formulating region-specific strategic responses.
The city plans to incorporate the results of this research into policy, aiming to systematize its rationale for hosting and accelerate efforts to build public consensus among citizens.
Additionally, Jeonju City intends to strengthen collaborative networks among academia, industry, and government, broaden its international sports network, and expand citizen participation in order to continuously enhance its competitiveness.
Yoon Dongwook, the acting mayor and deputy mayor of Jeonju City, stated, "The Olympics can be a turning point that changes the future of a city," adding, "By combining Jeonju’s sports, cultural, and tourism resources, we will create a differentiated model and gradually strengthen the foundation for hosting the Olympics in cooperation with North Jeolla Province."
