Volvo is introducing its all-electric flagship sport utility vehicle (SUV), the EX90, to the Korean market.

Volvo Cars Korea announced on April 1 that it will officially launch the EX90 in Korea, a model that represents the "Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV)" concept. The vehicle’s core functions are integrated around software, offering a unique feature of delivering an "ever-evolving experience the more you drive."

EX90 Equipped with 'Hugin Core'...Evolving into a 'Smartphone on Wheels'

The EX90 features Volvo’s proprietary core system, the "Hugin Core." Comprising the electrical architecture, core computer, zone controllers, and software, the Hugin Core is a next-generation technology that will form the foundation of all future Volvo electric vehicles launched in Korea, starting with the EX90.

It not only controls various in-vehicle systems but also rapidly transforms data collected via advanced indoor and outdoor sensor sets into intelligent information, which is leveraged to train next-generation safety and driver assistance systems. Additionally, over-the-air (OTA) updates are supported, enabling ongoing upgrades to vehicle functions, performance, and safety technologies-providing the experience of a true "smartphone on wheels."

Furthermore, the EX90 comes with the next-generation user experience, "Volvo Car UX," based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Cockpit Platform. Compared to the previous infotainment system, response speed has been improved by about two times, and three displays-14.5-inch center display, 9-inch driver display, and a head-up display (HUD)-provide intuitive access to essential information.

Alongside the existing Tmap infotainment service, the Naver Whale browser is also supported, allowing users to enjoy smartphone-like experiences such as over-the-top (OTT) video services, social networking services (SNS), and music streaming inside the vehicle. Additional 5G-based digital connectivity features are offered, including Apple Music and wireless CarPlay (iOS/Android).

Protecting Everyone on the Road, Beyond Drivers and Passengers

In line with Volvo’s long-term brand vision of "Zero Collision," the EX90 is equipped with Volvo’s new safety approach, "Safe Space Technology." The advanced sensor set-comprising five cameras, five radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors-is included as standard, setting a new level of safety by protecting not only drivers and passengers but also everyone on the road.

Additionally, the Driver Understanding System and the Occupant Sensing System have been introduced to monitor the driver's condition in real time and fundamentally prevent accidents involving children or pets left in the vehicle.

The EX90 is designed with an enhanced collision structure and safety cage. By optimally using lightweight aluminum and boron steel (ultra-high-strength steel), the battery is effectively protected in the event of an accident. As a result, compared to the previous XC90, torsional rigidity has been improved by 50% and energy absorption during collisions by 20%, significantly enhancing the strength and safety of the vehicle’s underbody and battery pack structure.

Other standard advanced safety features across all trims include next-generation Pilot Assist and Park Pilot Assist, road departure prevention and protection, blind spot warning and steering assist, intersection warning and emergency braking support-all signature safety technologies that Volvo is proud to offer.

The EX90 is launched in Korea with an all-wheel drive (AWD) twin motor and twin motor performance powertrain, combining a 106kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery with next-generation twin motors. The twin motor model delivers up to 456 horsepower (335kW), enabling acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds.

The twin motor performance model delivers up to 680 horsepower (500kW), achieving 0 to 100km/h acceleration in only 4.2 seconds. The AWD system increases stability and traction, enabling smooth cornering via instant torque distribution. The dual-chamber air suspension, available on the Ultra trim, provides a smoother and more comfortable ride compared to conventional air suspension systems.

In addition, the EX90 adopts an 800V battery system managed by proprietary battery management software. This allows for ultra-fast (DC) charging of up to 350kW, enabling 10% to 80% charge in approximately 22 minutes. The EX90 offers a maximum driving range of up to 625km per charge (WLTP standard).

Priced Below the XC90...Accelerating the Shift to Electrification

The EX90 is available in Plus and top-tier Ultra trims, differentiated by features such as wheel size, Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity sound system, high-definition pixel lights, soft door closing, and electrochromic glass roof.

Despite being an all-electric flagship SUV, the starting price of the EX90 is set lower than the existing XC90 T8 PHEV model. The price matches that of the XC90 T8 "Twin Motor Ultra 7-Seater" trim.

The newly introduced high-definition pixel lights on the EX90 express Volvo’s unique identity and can adapt the range of illumination almost infinitely to suit different road and environmental conditions. The exterior comes in eight colors inspired by Scandinavian nature, providing the largest range of color choices among Volvo models released in Korea to date.

Notably, the EX90 is the first in the industry to feature wood d?cor equipped with "SunLike LED" technology, offering light quality close to natural sunlight. This technology is supplied by the Korean company Seoul Semiconductor. Additionally, the Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity sound system, including speakers built into the front headrests, delivers an output of 1610W.

Volvo Cars Korea recognizes the entire ownership experience as a core value and is committed to ensuring peace of mind for EV customers by offering industry-leading benefits: a five-year or 100,000km free warranty and complimentary replacement of consumable parts, an eight-year or 160,000km high-voltage battery warranty, 15 years of free over-the-air (OTA) updates, and a five-year free 5G digital package-all as standard to provide a continuously improving smart car experience.

Yoonmo Lee, CEO of Volvo Cars Korea, stated, "The EX90 is an iconic model that perfectly combines Volvo’s nearly 100 years of safety heritage with top-tier technologies for future mobility. Moving forward, Volvo Cars Korea will continue to deliver Swedish premium value that becomes smarter and safer with every drive, ushering in a new era of SDVs that go beyond mere electrification."
