The Gyeongbokgung Palace Management Office of the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center announced on March 30 that the interiors of Jibokjae, arranged as a “small library,” and Palujeong would be open to the public from April 1 to October 31.
Jibokjae is a pavilion located on the west side of Geoncheonggung in Gyeongbokgung Palace, and its name means “to gather books as precious as jade.” It was used by King Gojong as both a study and an office, as well as a place to receive foreign envoys. On either side are Palujeong, a two-story octagonal pavilion, and Hyeopgildang, a single-story building.
Since 2016, the Gyeongbokgung Palace Management Office has operated this space by stocking it with over 1,700 books related to Joseon Dynasty history, culture, and the royal family. Due to the impact of COVID-19, public access was suspended in 2020 and 2021, but resumed in 2022. This year, through a work agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education's Jeongdok Library, an additional 150 new books have been secured. Various cultural programs will be offered utilizing these resources.
The opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace can use the facilities. However, they will be closed every Monday and Tuesday, during the peak summer period (June to August), Chuseok holidays (September 24 to 26), and on days when cultural events are held. For more details, please check the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center website or contact them by phone.
