Gyeongsang National University (GNU, President Jinhoe Kwon) has strongly demonstrated its status as a research-oriented national university, ranking among the top universities nationwide in both research output and overall research achievement, according to the <2025 University Research Activity Status Survey Analysis Report> published by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
In particular, this analysis found that Gyeongsang National University is not limited to quantitative growth alone; it has also achieved both efficiency and qualitative results, being recognized as a "high-efficiency research university."
According to the report, Gyeongsang National University's "research publication performance" reached a total of 1,129.7 papers, ranking 13th nationwide. This result places the university in the upper tier among all universities and demonstrates its competitive position among regional flagship national universities.
Especially in the Gyeongnam, Busan, and Ulsan regions, Gyeongsang National University ranked second after Pusan National University, further solidifying its position as a key research hub in the southeastern region.
In detail, Gyeongsang National University published 672.3 papers in domestic professional journals and 452.8 papers in international professional journals, maintaining a well-balanced research portfolio. Notably, its performance in domestic professional journals ranked third nationwide, following Pusan National University and Dankook University. This indicates that the university has established a stable research system across both basic and applied fields, rather than achieving temporary results in a specific area. Its steady output of international papers also signifies meaningful achievements in securing global research competitiveness.
Additionally, regarding "central government research funding performance," Gyeongsang National University secured KRW 88.37 billion across 698 projects, ranking 20th nationwide. For "internal research funding performance," the university recorded KRW 7.089 billion across 443 projects, ranking 19th nationwide. In terms of research funding acquisition, the university firmly placed within the top 20 among all universities in Korea. In the "research funding by academic field" category, Gyeongsang National University secured KRW 13.51 billion across 197 projects in the agriculture, fisheries, and marine sciences sector, ranking eighth in this field.
Notably, in the agriculture, fisheries, and marine sciences sector, Gyeongsang National University has produced clear outcomes based on the research funding it secured. In the academic field-specific publication category, the university ranked first nationwide in agriculture, fisheries, and marine sciences with 132.6 papers, demonstrating very high efficiency in terms of "output relative to input."
The consistent hosting of domestic and international academic conferences was also noteworthy. Gyeongsang National University held a total of 440 events-including 21 international academic conferences, 83 domestic academic conferences, and 336 other academic events-across 36 research institutes, accounting for a 3.6% share and ranking eighth among universities nationwide.
In particular, its international academic conferences accounted for a 3.7% share, ranking seventh nationwide. In terms of "publication performance," the university ranked 12th nationwide. The university produced 60.4 publications (with 0.06 publications per person), accounting for a 1.5% share.
Gyeongsang National University has stably maintained its position in the top 20 nationwide for research output, and in some detailed indicators, has advanced to the top 10 and even the top 3. It belongs to the top group of research universities among regional flagship national universities, and together with Pusan National University, forms a dual leadership structure in the Gyeongnam, Busan, and Ulsan regions.
Choi Byeonggeun, Head of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation at Gyeongsang National University, stated, "Gyeongsang National University is further strengthening its competitiveness as a research-oriented national university by simultaneously securing an 'efficient research system that generates high research output' and a 'sustainable research production structure.' This is expected to serve as a foundation for playing a key role in future national R&D policies and the establishment of regional innovation ecosystems," he emphasized.
