Samsung Changwon Hospital first opened on March 16, 1981 as Masan Goryeo Hospital, launching as a modern general hospital that introduced the medical system of Seoul Goryeo Hospital (now Kangbuk Samsung Hospital) to the local region. In 1995, it was renamed Masan Samsung Hospital and, along with Samsung Medical Center in Seoul and Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, expanded Samsung's medical contribution initiatives. In 2000, it became the first designated Regional Emergency Medical Center in South Gyeongsang Province, playing a central role in emergency care ever since. In 2010, it became an affiliated hospital of Sungkyunkwan University, ushering in the era of a university hospital for unified Changwon City. The completion of the new main building in 2016 significantly expanded its clinical infrastructure, marking what was effectively a second foundation for the hospital.
Since being designated as the first tertiary general hospital in Changwon Special City in 2021, Samsung Changwon Hospital has maintained this status for two consecutive evaluation cycles, establishing itself as a core institution for critical care in the region.
Notably, by continuously recruiting medical professionals from Samsung Medical Center in Seoul and strengthening clinical capabilities centered on its cancer center, the hospital has achieved meaningful results in critical care. To date, it has performed 52 liver transplants, 3,460 robotic surgeries, treated 8,071 new patients in the Department of Radiation Oncology, and carried out 46 transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures.
In celebration of its 45th anniversary, Samsung Changwon Hospital also unveiled its vision for advancing toward its 50th year. As a tertiary general hospital, it plans to further specialize in severe diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and to strengthen a collaborative healthcare system in partnership with local medical institutions.
The hospital also aims to pursue medical innovation by utilizing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, while fostering a hospital culture that enhances staff pride based on a horizontal and autonomous organizational culture.
In his commemorative address, Director Oh Juhyeon stated, "Building on the pride of having created a history of 'firsts' over the 45 years since our founding in 1981, we will further expand Samsung's medical contribution initiatives and continue to grow as a hospital that shapes a bright future for regional healthcare as the only tertiary general hospital in Changwon Special City."
