On March 15, the Bereaved Families Association of the December 29 Muan Airport Jeju Air Disaster stated, "While patrolling the outer area of the collapsed airport wall at the time of the accident, we found more than 10 objects that are believed to be human remains," and added, "There are also pieces of aircraft wreckage that have not yet been collected remaining on the navigational aid facility's barbed wire fence."
The families believe that the recently discovered objects are most likely remains that were not recovered from the site at the time, and have requested forensic analysis from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency's Scientific Crime Investigation Unit.
A representative of the Bereaved Families Association said, "Since remains have been successively discovered in the wreckage recently, we conducted patrols at the accident site considering the possibility of additional remains, and several objects that appear to be remains were found visually. Not only the wreckage stored at the airport fire station, but the entire area around the accident site needs to be thoroughly reinvestigated."
Currently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board are conducting reinvestigations of the wreckage that was initially collected and stored behind the airport fire station twice a week.
Sixty-four remains have been found among this wreckage, and nine of them have been identified as belonging to seven victims.
As remains continue to be discovered, President Lee Jaemyung ordered strict disciplinary action against those responsible on March 12.
