Cheongdo County announced that it successfully held a commemorative event on the 13th at the Cheongdocheon Riverside Area to mark the 56th anniversary of the Saemaul Undong movement and the great transition to a green economy through carbon neutrality.

This event holds significant meaning as Cheongdo County, faced with the global crises of climate change and environmental pollution, pursued two important goals simultaneously: the era-defining challenge of achieving carbon neutrality and realizing a green economy through resource recycling. By doing so, the county both reexamined the contemporary role of the Saemaul Undong movement and declared its transition into a second global Saemaul Undong.

The event was attended by key figures from various fields, including Assemblyman Lee Manhee, Governor Lee Cheolwoo, Choi Hyungjae, Secretary General of the Saemaul Central Association, Park Seongman, Chairman of the Provincial Council, Jeon Jongyul, Chairman of the County Council, Jeon Inju, President of the Cheongdo County Saemaul Association, Shin Chang-eon, President of the Korea Federation of Resource Circulation Organizations, and more than 800 residents, all of whom expressed keen interest and support for Cheongdo County's environmental protection efforts.

The event, held under the theme of “Carbon Neutral Saemaul,” included an awards ceremony commemorating the 56th anniversary of the Saemaul Undong movement, as well as a ceremony recognizing “environmental merit recipients,” conveying encouragement and gratitude to residents who made dedicated contributions to environmental protection.

Notably, the core program of this event was the “Recyclables Transport Vehicle Parade.”

Since 2000, for 26 years, the Cheongdo County Saemaul Association has successfully conducted a “Recyclables Collection Contest,” which has evolved beyond a simple competition to become a successful model of the Cheongdo Saemaul environmental movement that has greatly raised environmental awareness among residents and contributed significantly to spreading a culture of resource recycling.

Kim Hasu, Mayor of Cheongdo County, stated, “This ‘Cheongdo Environmental Revival’ is a meaningful occasion that demonstrates Cheongdo County’s strong commitment to inheriting the spirit of the Saemaul Undong movement and actively taking the lead in solving environmental issues through a great transition to a green economy via carbon neutrality.” He emphasized, “Going forward, Cheongdo County will adopt ‘Carbon Neutral Saemaul’ as its core value and do its utmost to achieve sustainable development based on a green economy.”
