"Woke Up Looking Like 'Avatar'... Blue Skin Sends Man to ER, Here's What Happened"

Rushed to Emergency Room on Suspicion of Oxygen Deficiency
Turns Out the Cause Was Dye from a New Bed Sheet

A British man woke up one morning to find his entire body had turned blue, causing a commotion as he was rushed to the hospital. However, it was later revealed that the cause was not a health problem, but dye that had transferred from his newly purchased bed sheet.

According to British media outlet SWNS and others on March 10 (local time), Tommy Lynch, who lives in Derbyshire, England, was recently shocked upon waking up and noticing the condition of his body. Patches of his skin had turned blue. Since he had felt his face looked unusually pale the previous day, he was convinced something was wrong with his health.

A friend who saw Lynch's appearance immediately advised him to go to the emergency room. The friend, who works as a caregiver, thought Lynch's skin tone resembled that of patients with oxygen deficiency symptoms from past experience and believed it could be a medical emergency.

Describing the situation, Lynch said, "I looked like a character from the movie 'Avatar.' The doctors even commented that they had never seen a living patient with skin that color."

Blue Dye Discovered After Wiping with Alcohol Swab

At the hospital, Lynch underwent tests while wearing an oxygen mask. As the medical staff wiped his arm with an alcohol swab to draw blood, something unexpected happened-the swab began turning blue. Only then did the doctors realize that the color change was likely due to an external dye, not a medical condition, and they burst out laughing.

In fact, Lynch had used a new bed sheet he had purchased two days earlier without washing it first. The dye remaining on the sheet had transferred to his skin while he slept, making his entire body appear blue.

Fortunately, it was confirmed that he had no health problems. However, Lynch said it took several baths over the course of a week for the color to completely disappear from his skin. He added, "My face turned even redder than my blue skin," and noted that he learned an important lesson: new bedding should always be washed before use.

New Bedding Should Be Washed Before Use

Experts recommend washing new bed sheets or duvet covers at least once before using them. This helps remove residual dye, chemicals, or dust left over from the manufacturing process. They also advise using a mild detergent and ensuring the bedding is thoroughly dried to reduce the risk of skin irritation.
