Member of the National Assembly Junho Jung of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Gwangju Buk-gu Gap) has announced a set of tailored pledges aimed at enhancing the industrial competitiveness of eastern Jeollanam-do, expanding marine tourism, and strengthening public medical infrastructure.
On March 12, Assemblyman Jung visited Yeosu and presented a vision centered on the advancement of the Yeosu·Suncheon·Gwangyang industrial complexes, the creation of a "1,000 Islands" resort cluster, the promotion of the cultural content industry in Suncheon, and the establishment of a National Cancer Center in the eastern region.
Assemblyman Jung stated, "The eastern region connecting Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang has been a core pillar of Korea's economy for 60 years, but it now faces a crisis due to global oversupply and changes in industrial structure." He emphasized, "We need to transform the existing industrial structure into a high value-added system by integrating eco-friendly and advanced technologies."
Assemblyman Jung also unveiled a plan to restructure the Yeosu·Suncheon·Gwangyang industrial complexes into high value-added zones focused on fine chemicals and specialty steel. The strategy is to move away from a production volume-oriented structure and enhance global competitiveness by introducing eco-friendly and advanced processes.
He also proposed establishing a "knowledge-based production system" by combining Gwangju's research capacity with the eastern region's industrial complexes, so that research drives industry and industry, in turn, further advances research.
In the field of marine tourism, he presented a plan to develop a "1,000 Islands" resort cluster by connecting the island resources of the Dadohae to foster an internationally recognized tourist destination. The plan also envisions nurturing the yacht marina industry and attracting international yacht competitions to create a foundation for marine tourism that combines resorts and marine sports.
Regarding the cultural content industry, Jung pledged to support the creation of a "K-Disney" cluster in Suncheon that combines ecological assets with cultural content such as animation.
Additionally, he announced plans to establish a National Cancer Center in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do in order to expand the area's medical infrastructure. Assemblyman Jung argued that attracting the National Cancer Center as an incentive for administrative integration between Jeollanam-do and Gwangju would help reduce the burden on critically ill cancer patients who currently travel to the Seoul metropolitan area for treatment, and would help narrow regional disparities in medical services.
Jung stated, "By creating a global landmark where industry, culture, tourism, and medical welfare coexist, we will rapidly reinvigorate the growth engine of the eastern region of Jeollanam-do."
