Pohang City announced that it will implement a slate disposal support project in 2026 to protect citizens' health and create a pleasant residential environment.

The detailed project scale includes: ▲ Demolition of slate in 156 residential buildings ▲ Roof renovation for 19 residential buildings ▲ Demolition of slate in 24 non-residential buildings such as warehouses and livestock barns.

The amount of support will vary depending on the type of building.

For residential building demolition, general households can receive up to 7 million won per building, while vulnerable groups such as basic livelihood security recipients will receive full coverage of demolition costs.

In particular, the roof renovation project for vulnerable groups will provide up to 10 million won to enhance residential stability.

For non-residential buildings such as warehouses or livestock barns, if the slate area is 200㎡ or less, the entire demolition cost will be covered to alleviate citizens' financial burden.

Additionally, the city will designate this year as the “Year of Waste Slate Collection” as a temporary initiative.

This measure aims to minimize the risk of asbestos exposure by including not only slate roofs damaged by aging or natural disasters but also residual slate debris abandoned on properties as collection targets.

Citizens who wish to participate in the project should bring photos of their buildings and apply at their local Eup, Myeon, or Dong Administrative Welfare Center before the budget is exhausted.

Afterward, the project will proceed in the following order: confirmation of recipients, site area inspection by the contractor, demolition, and roof renovation.

However, applicants must bear any costs exceeding the support limit, and if demolition is carried out voluntarily before being selected as a recipient, financial support will not be provided.

Sunyoung Park, Director of the Environmental Policy Division, said, “We urge active participation to protect citizens’ health from asbestos, a Class 1 carcinogen, and to create a pleasant urban environment. For more details, please check the notices on the Pohang City website or contact the Resource Recycling Team of the Environmental Policy Division.”
