On March 12, Gyeongju City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Chung-Hyo National Sports Center at San 156-2, Chung-Hyo-dong.
This project is being promoted to expand community sports infrastructure in the West Gyeongju area.
Approximately 200 people attended the ceremony, including Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nakyoung, National Assembly member Kim Seokki, Gyeongju City Council Chairman Lee Donghyup, members of the city and provincial councils, and local residents, to celebrate the start of construction.
The Chung-Hyo National Sports Center is a project aimed at improving the sports environment for residents in West Gyeongju.
It was initiated to address the inconvenience residents faced due to the lack of a gymnasium and swimming pool, which previously required them to travel into the city center.
The center will feature a six-lane, 25-meter swimming pool on the first floor, and a table tennis hall and fitness center on the second floor, along with parking and other convenience facilities.
On the same site, a Bandabi Sports Center is also planned to promote sports for people with disabilities.
The Bandabi Sports Center will include a 22-lane bowling alley on the first floor and a multipurpose gymnasium on the second floor. The architectural design is currently underway.
Gyeongju City expects this project to significantly expand much-needed sports facilities in the West Gyeongju area and to create an environment where residents can enjoy a variety of sports activities close to home.
The construction is scheduled for completion in the first half of next year. Upon completion, the facility is expected to serve not only as a venue for exercise and leisure activities but also as a local community space for communication and interaction among residents.
Gyeongju Mayor Joo Nakyoung stated, "The Chung-Hyo National Sports Center will serve as a key facility for community sports, supporting the health and vitality of West Gyeongju residents. We will thoroughly manage the construction process to ensure not a single safety incident occurs, and do our utmost to complete the project on schedule without any setbacks."
