HLB Life Care, a subsidiary of HLB Global, announced on March 12 that its personal continuous glucose monitor (CGM), PicoRing, has been approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety as a Class 3 medical device.
The continuous glucose monitor market is rapidly expanding as these devices go beyond traditional diabetes management tools to become essential instruments for personal health and wellness data management. This approval is significant as it marks HLB Life Care's first achievement in its transition toward becoming an artificial intelligence (AI)-based digital healthcare platform company.
PicoRing is an ultra-compact smart continuous glucose monitor. It features a miniature sensor that is smaller than a 100-won coin and lighter than a single sugar cube (2.16g), making it easy and comfortable to wear in daily life.
Once attached, it measures blood glucose levels in real time, 24 hours a day, for up to 15 days without the need for blood sampling. Blood glucose data is automatically transmitted every minute to the user's smartphone via Bluetooth through the PicoRing app. Additionally, PicoRing has achieved a high measurement accuracy with a MARD of 8.66%. MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference) indicates the difference between the measured and actual blood glucose values, with lower values reflecting higher accuracy.
HLB Life Care has enhanced user convenience by integrating blood glucose measurement, data analysis, and health management services into the MyPicoRing app. This allows users to manage everything from blood glucose monitoring and pattern analysis to lifestyle management within a single platform, eliminating the need to switch between multiple apps. In addition, the company has secured price competitiveness, further improving accessibility for users.
HLB Life Care plans to expand its business scope to include a variety of digital healthcare services, such as personalized meal plans, health supplements, and weight management programs, all based on blood glucose data. Furthermore, the company intends to accelerate its business strategy aimed at becoming an AI-based digital healthcare platform company, with the launch of PicoRing serving as a key milestone.
HLB Life Care aims to provide personalized health data by combining AI-based digital technology with cohort data from medical institutions. The company plans to build a platform structure where data translates into business revenue by connecting predictive health data to customized consumer goods in B2C commerce and collaborating with insurance companies and health checkup centers for B2B operations. Additionally, HLB Life Care will expand open digital healthcare businesses that combine external data to create new added value.
