During the evening rush hour in Yeomchang-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, a community bus was involved in an accident, colliding with five vehicles in succession and injuring more than 20 people, including passengers and pedestrians. The bus crossed the center line, crashed into vehicles waiting at a traffic signal in the opposite lane, and finally came to a stop after hitting an apartment guardrail.
According to the police and fire authorities on March 10, at approximately 5:37 p.m. that day, a community bus that had just let off passengers near an apartment alleyway in Yeomchang-dong, Gangseo-gu, suddenly began moving. The bus failed to slow down, crossed the center line, and was involved in a chain collision with five vehicles waiting in the opposite lane.
The impact of the accident caused severe damage to the affected vehicles, including taxis and trucks. The bus only stopped after crashing into the apartment's guardrail. A total of 24 people were injured in this accident, including the bus driver in his 60s, 17 bus passengers, 5 occupants of the damaged vehicles, and 1 pedestrian. Among those injured, two were reported to be pregnant women; fortunately, all injuries were identified as minor.
Immediately after the accident, the police and fire departments implemented road safety measures to manage the scene. Due to this major accident occurring on a side street during the evening rush hour, traffic congestion in the surrounding area was severe for some time.
The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident, reviewing statements from witnesses, vehicle black box footage, and nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings. In particular, they are focusing on the fact that the bus suddenly moved immediately after passengers disembarked, and are considering all possibilities, including a sudden unintended acceleration due to vehicle malfunction and potential driver error.
