Universal Ballet will stage the original ballet "Simcheong," celebrating its 40th anniversary, as the opening production of the 2026 season at the Opera Theater of the Seoul Arts Center from May 1 to 3.
"Simcheong" was first performed in 1986 at the National Theater of Korea, choreographed by Adrian Dellas, Universal Ballet’s founding artistic director, with a libretto by the late critic Park Yonggu and music by Kevin Barber-Pickard. Since then, the production has showcased the stature of K-Ballet, having been performed in more than 40 cities across 12 countries including France, Russia, and the United States. Over the past 40 years, "Simcheong" has continuously evolved-its choreography, direction, staging, and costumes have been refined to resonate with contemporary audiences. This upcoming performance has been officially invited as part of the 16th Korea Ballet Festival.

Universal Ballet’s principal dancers Kang Miseon and Hong Hyanggi, along with emerging talent Lee Yurim, will portray the role of Simcheong. Kang Minwoo, returning from injury, and principal dancer Eom Jaeyong, who also serves as an advisor, will make special appearances as the King, adding significance to the 40th anniversary celebration. In addition, principal dancer Lim Seonwoo will perform as both the Dragon King and the Captain, while newcomer Yoo Juhyung, who joined the company this year, will debut as the Dragon King.
Moon Hoon-sook, director of Universal Ballet, remarked, "Since its premiere in 1986, 'Simcheong' has been beloved for 40 years-it is the history and pride of our company, and a precious asset to Korean ballet. By interpreting the K-spirit of filial piety in ballet, a theme unseen anywhere else in the world, this work has developed into a story that resonates with audiences across generations and regions worldwide." She added, "This performance will not only commemorate the past, but also provide a meaningful moment to connect with today’s audience and look toward the future. As Family Month approaches, I hope families will attend together and reflect on the value of filial piety in a warm and memorable experience."
Conductor Ji Joong-bae will lead the Hankyung Arte Philharmonic. Tickets are available for purchase through Nol Ticket, the Seoul Arts Center, and YES24.
