Daejeon Metropolitan City will begin implementing the "2026 Early Scrappage Support Program for Aged (Diesel) Vehicles" starting from March 10, 2026.
This initiative aims to reduce urban air pollutants and fine dust, and to help create a clean and clear atmospheric environment. For this year, the early scrappage program targets 2,630 vehicles, with a project budget of 6.1 billion won, and will continue until the allocated funds are exhausted.
Applications for the program can be submitted through the Korea Automobile Environmental Association or the vehicle emissions website.
The support applies to diesel vehicles with emission grades 4 and 5 (grade 5 includes vehicles using fuels other than diesel), as well as three types of on-road construction machinery (dump trucks, concrete mixer trucks, and concrete pump trucks) manufactured in compliance with emission standards applied before August 31, 2009.
Additionally, forklifts and excavators manufactured according to emission standards in effect before December 31, 2004 are also eligible for support.
Eligible applicants must own vehicles currently registered in Daejeon, and the vehicles must have been continuously registered as being based in an air quality control area or in Daejeon for at least six months. The final owner must also have held ownership of the vehicle for at least six months.
The subsidy amount varies depending on factors such as the vehicle’s gross weight (with 3.5 tons as a reference), the vehicle’s standard value, whether the vehicle is scrapped early, whether a replacement vehicle is purchased, and the maximum subsidy limit. Residents wishing to receive the early scrappage subsidy must check the official announcement posted on Daejeon's website.
In particular, the early scrappage support program for grade 5 vehicles will end this year, so those who wish to receive the subsidy for early scrappage of grade 5 vehicles must apply before the annual budget is depleted.
Moon Changyong, Director of the Environmental Bureau, stated, "We expect significant improvement in air quality, including the reduction of fine dust, through the early scrappage of aged grade 4 and 5 diesel vehicles and construction machinery. As this project is being promoted to reduce urban air pollutants, we ask for the active participation of our citizens."
